Fall 2014 Class: Intro to Robotics

During the Fall 2014 semester, Matei Ciocarlie will be teaching MECE 4602 - Introduction to Robotics. Class description below.

What is Robotics? We can think of it as the science of building devices that physically interact with their environment. The most useful robots do it precisely, powerfully, repeatedly, tirelessly, fast, or some combinations of these. The most interesting robots maybe even do it intelligently. This class will cover the fundamentals of robotics, focusing on both the mind and the body.

We will cover the following topics:

  • fundamentals: representation of spatial relationships
  • robot arms, manipulation and grasping
  • basic control for robot joints
  • mobile robots and navigation
  • sensing: vision, range sensing, tactile sensing and proprioception
  • complete robot systems; present and future applications for robots.

We will also make extensive use of ROS - the open-source Robot Operating System. At least 2 of the 4 homework projects will require ROS implementations of various robotics algorithms.
